A Brief History of the Club

The Forest Curling club was formed in 1884. Curling was on natural ice, but it has been stated that open air curling took place prior to 1884. In 1914 club rooms were built, but several years later the building suffered severe wind damage and was abandoned in 1920. There was no curling locally during the 1921-1924 seasons.

A new curling club was built in 1924 consisting of two sheets and served continuously until the building was sold in 1953. In 1954 the curlers formed the Forest Curling Club Limited. The curlers rented ice two days a week to curl in the arena. This was the first curling on artificial ice. On November 12, 1960 the arena was destroyed by fire and all curling stones were lost. Arrangements were made with the town to add club rooms to the north end of the new ice arena.

In 1971 an agreement was made with the town to locate the present four sheet rink to the north end of the arena and extend the club rooms upper area to provide a viewing area. In 1986 the name of the club was changed to "Forest Curling and Social Club". The new company established a ten member board of directors to be elected annually.

All improvements inside the club rooms have been financed by the club. The members run the bar and kitchen which keeps money in the club. There have been many changes since 1884 to our curling club and to the game of curling.

Many improvements have been made to the ice arena and associated equipment (e.g. cement pad, roof, siding, dehumidifier, chiller, etc.), but 2011 marks the first major renovation of club rooms since 1971. New locker rooms, washrooms, arena lighting and HVAC system represent Phase 1 of our overall modernization plans.

Some things that have never changed are the friendship, volunteerism and sincere openness our members show to anyone who is new to the club or just participating for the day or weekend.
